Instagram is probably the biggest social network based on images. But being a social net mainly for sharing pictures between users, has not limited its growth at all.
Despite what you may think, joining Instagram will help you discover a world that it is beyond your frontiers, as you will be able to explore the world in the shape of photographs by the hand of those who live in foreign countries.
But Instagram is not always so serious (or professional), in this social network you can also find content out of place, ridiculous or too stupid. What is the reason? To become the favorite of many at any price.
The basics of Instagram
Instagram is as simple as this: you see something you like, you take a picture of it, and you upload it to the social network.
But although the basics are as simple as that, there are still some features that make Instagram become a complex app. Although…before proceeding, remember to download the app Instagram sign in!
Once you have downloaded the desired Instagram app version (see the section called “Platforms that support Instagram” for more info about downloading this app), you should create an Instagram account and log in your device before starting using it.
When creating your account, you will be asked to provide some info about yourself. And when you consider that your personal details are not sure, use the settings on Instagram to limit the permissions that users have on your profile. (crazy, isn’t it?).
So once you have solved this small inconvenience by setting your personal info to be seen only by your friends, you can carry on discovering Instagram. You will now have probably noticed that there are some people on Instagram that you know, and you can be friends or follow them, so their photos will show up on your news feed.
If you want to use the full app, you should now start taking photographs and uploading them to Instagram. Those pictures that you take with your camera are not uploaded to Instagram instantly, so do not worry about any photo that you may have taken and that you do not wish to share.
When you upload a pic into Instagram, there are a few things that you can configure. Of course, we are talking about the Instagram filters. These filters will make any regular snap into a superb snap, adding any kind of effect that you can think of. Also, remember to add the geo-location to your photo, so your friends can know where did you take it!.
Platforms that support Instagram
Instagram is available in all kind of platforms, regardless of if they are smartphones, tablets or just your computer. Although you can access Instagram from their website (www.Instagram.com), this social network was designed for using it in smartphones with Internet connection.
Although Instagram was originally created only for those using iOS (iPhone and so on) it now can be installed in the main mobile operative systems, which include iOS, Android and Windows Phone.
You can download the adequate Instagram app by accessing to iTunes if you use a mobile device with iOS, Google Play if you use a mobile device with Android or the Nokia Ovi Shop, if you use a Windows Phone device.
Also, by going into the Instagram website you don’t need to login to download the application on your Android or iOS platform
Yes, that is true. Although the main reason to be for Instagram are pictures, videos are also included within the app, and they are not left over!
Just like Twitter does, Instagram allows you to upload short videos into it, with a maximum length of 15 seconds. These videos can be modified as they are being recorded, as you can pause the video and continue recording after a short break.
Filters can also be applied to videos, so you can give them that spark that will make them to stand out from the rest. As if this was not enough, you can also upload videos from your personal library, so you do not need to record them with Instagram (although it may become more comfy to do so with time).
Longer videos than 15 seconds can be first selected, but only those 15 seconds of the video that you choose will be uploaded into Instagram. Nowadays, you can only upload one video at a time, but in the future this may be able to be upgraded to several videos at a time.
Instagram’s news feed
We have said before that there is news feed in Instagram, but we would like to give some more detail about this. On the news feed, you will be able to see any picture of those people you follow or that you are friends, along with your own uploads.
Photographs and videos are mixed with no filter, and this can become a bit confusing. Luckily, as Instagram continues growing up, there may end up being a new tab on the news feed only for videos.
On the news feed you can also see some general snaps. There is a tab named “Popular” where you will be able to see those videos and pictures that are the most popular ones among all users.
There is also another tab, which includes news about your friends (not pictures at all). It shows the latest actions that were made by your friends, including new connections, comments and likes.
Also, you have the option to comment and like your friends’ Instagram images, making it more of a social network similar to Facebook on a way. This is the main feature that can characterize Instagram as a social network, as it allows the interaction between users with words and not only by sharing pictures.
Instagram is a great social network, but it still has some things to improve. We may start by the default settings, they are low-security and allow strangers to see your personal details. Users are not warned that this happens, and in a lot of casas, they ignore that they are sharing their details in public.
There is also the fact that, although the videos that Instagram allows are longer than those on Twitter (15 seconds), they are still quite short in length. The uploading process is a bit complicated too if it gets compared to other social networks that allow image and video sharing, like Vine or even Facebook.
Also, the geo-locator does not always work as it should do, although it is true that the developers of Instagram are paying special attention to this feature lately, and now every profile includes a map so you can see where the photos were taken easily.
Because of being a social network based on images and videos, it can be a bit frustrating for those users with an old phone, or just a smartphone with a low RAM memory (512MB). These users will be able to use Instagram, but it will not work properly and it will consume most of the resources of the phone while it is in use, making it slower. Also, those users may find a limited use to the video features, as they are not able to post their own videos.
